Welcome to Cal Joan Pau!
Our story, like that of any Catalan farmhouse, is full of goodbyes and welcomes. It begins in 1913, when great-grandfather Josep Calmet built the house with the intention of handing it over to a family of tenant farmers, the Soler-Martí family, who lived there in exchange for looking after it and keeping a percentage of the produce from the land. One of the sons of this family, Jaumet, continued his parents’ legacy. He started a family with his wife, Antònia, and they had two daughters: Marina and Rosa. After 80 years of enjoying and enduring country life, Jaume fell ill and finally moved to Calaf, where he died a few months later.
The house, inherited by the Calmet family, remained empty for years. That lack of life slowly damaged it until, finally, in 2004, we took the plunge. We wanted to bring Cal Joan Pau back to life! So we decided to restore the house and return it to its essence: welcoming families. In the restoration we wanted to preserve its traditional warmth, shape and volumes, while adding today’s comforts.
Little by little Cal Joan Pau came back to life and, finally, in August 2006 it reopened its doors to Jaumet’s family and to everyone who came to celebrate with us.
Cal Joan Pau has always been a welcoming house, and we want it to remain so for many years, hosting everyone who wants to enjoy an extraordinary natural setting and a house restored with great love and respect. Those of us who now care for it try to offer guests a place to reconnect with the calm and serenity of the holm oaks, as well as the joy and freedom of the sun, the air and slow conversations.
